Empowering Girl Child in Tchnician training

For Vyline Biira from Kasese District in western Uganda and Adoch Rachael from Kwania District in northern Uganda, pursuing technician training at Oyam Institute of Sciences and Technology represents an opportunity to build practical skills and broaden their career prospects. Their story brings a human face to an important educational goal: giving young women the opportunity to participate in technical professions and contribute to the development of their communities. Located in Minakulu, Oyam District, Oyam Institute of Sciences and Technology offers a setting where technical education can become a pathway towards greater independence. For female trainees, that pathway is about more than obtaining a qualification. It is also about developing the competence and confidence to solve problems, take responsibility and prepare for the workplace. The participation of Biira and Rachael carries a clear message to other young women: technician training deserves a place among their career choices. Their example can help families look beyond familiar expectations and recognise the possibilities that practical, skills-based education offers their daughters. For OIST, empowering the girl child means placing young women within the wider conversation about skills, innovation and community development. The value of this work lies in helping trainees connect classroom learning with the practical demands of their chosen occupations. Meaningful empowerment requires sustained support—from families, instructors, institutions and employers. Girls need encouragement to enrol, opportunities to practise and guidance as they prepare to enter professional life. Coming from different parts of Uganda, Biira and Rachael share a journey that highlights the importance of opening doors to technical education. When young women have opportunities to develop technical competence, they are better positioned to shape their own futures and contribute to the communities around them.
